Etiquette and tricky cases

The godparents’ table at a christening

The godparents’ table is the reference table at a christening. It usually brings together the parents, the godparents and the baby, and has a prominent position. Here’s how to plan it without offending anyone.

Step by step

  1. Decide who’s in

The godparents, the parents and the baby are the core. If you like, add the closest grandparents or the baby’s siblings.

  2. Choose the spot

A prominent position, preferably with a view of the room, but not isolated. Near the door or the cake area are usual places.

  3. Work out the seats

Count the adults and children who will sit there. If there isn’t enough room, choose a bigger table or two tables pushed together.

  4. Pin the seats

In Seatalia, pin the godparents and the parents to the table. Auto-seat never moves them.

If the godparents don’t know each other

Seat them side by side and introduce them before the meal. It can be a chance to get to know each other. If there is more than one couple of godparents, keep them all at the same table, with the parents.

What about the grandparents?

Give them a table with good access and away from the music. If they want to sit at the godparents’ table, that’s fine; just remember to count the seats.

Frequently asked questions

Can the godparents sit with the parents?

Yes, that’s the most common arrangement. If the family is large, the godparents can have a table of their own near the parents’.

Do I need a high chair?

Ask the restaurant in advance and note it in the plan so you get the right table.
